Athens is one of the few European capitals where you can walk to a legal brothel, and people search for them in every spelling: brothels Athens, bourdela, oikoi anoxis, ierodoules, prostitutes. Most results are either tourist gossip or thinly disguised advertising. We run an escort agency, which is a neighbouring trade and not the same one, so this is the plain account from next door.
The law, briefly
A 1999 law makes prostitution legal in Greece when it happens in a licensed house with registered workers who pass regular health checks. The house needs a permit, a fixed address away from schools and churches, and a maximum of a few workers. Permits are scarce, so most of the trade that actually happens in Athens is outside the licensed system, which matters for what follows.
Where the licensed houses are
Filis street and its side streets north of Omonia have been the address for a hundred years and still are. Metaxourgeio, particularly around Iasonos and the streets towards Kolonou, is the other cluster. A licensed house is a ground-floor flat with a coloured light, a woman at the door and a price posted; the visit is short and the price is a fraction of an escort booking. Daytime is calmer than night in both districts, and Filis after midnight is not where a visitor should be walking alone.
The unlicensed studios
Advertised on the classified sites as studios, massage or private apartments, spread through Kypseli, Patisia, Ampelokipi and along Syngrou. Some are run honestly; many are not. The common problems are a different woman from the photos, a price that grows at the door, and a sudden extra once you are inside. Unlicensed means no inspection and no one to complain to.
Reviews, stories and safety tips
The forums have reviewed every house in the city many times over, and the reviews go stale within weeks because the women move. Use them to avoid a house with a recent run of complaints, not to pick a good one. Safety is simple: agree the price before anything, keep your wallet on you, insist on a condom, and leave the moment anything changes. Never follow a street approach to an address you did not choose.
Swinger clubs, strip clubs and “hidden” brothels
Different things. Swinger clubs are private couples’ clubs in the suburbs and do not sell sex. Strip clubs sell dances and drinks; the ones that offer more are the ones that overcharge. “Backstage” or hidden brothels behind clubs are mostly forum legend.
Escort or brothel
An escort comes to you, stays an hour or an evening, and the price buys her time and company rather than an act at a door. People who want one rarely want the other. If you want a verified companion at your hotel, that is our trade: see the roster and how it works. If you want Filis street, you now know where it is. Our adult entertainment guide covers the rest of the city.
