Fake listings in Athens, and how to tell them apart
Fake call girl adverts are a real problem in this city and they cost visitors money almost every week. The pattern is nearly always the same: photographs taken from someone else, a profile that exists only to collect an advance payment, and a number that stops answering the moment the transfer clears. Nobody was ever going to arrive.
The defence is not luck. It is a handful of checks that take about four minutes and catch the overwhelming majority of these operations. What follows is written by people who spend their working lives inside this trade in Athens and who lose business every time a client gets burned by someone pretending to be an agency.
The mechanics of the common scams
The advance payment
The dominant one. You are told a deposit is needed to secure the booking, to cover a taxi, or to prove you are serious. It is requested by bank transfer, by a money transfer service, or increasingly in cryptocurrency or app credit. Once sent, it cannot be recovered and there is no recipient to pursue.
Borrowed photographs
Images lifted from social media, from adult performers, or from legitimate agency rosters in other countries. A gallery of professional studio shots with no consistency of setting, lighting or body between them is assembled from several different women.
Bait and switch
Someone does arrive, and it is not the person in the photographs. This is the version that most often turns unpleasant, because a confrontation is happening at your door with someone who has no interest in your satisfaction.
The verification trick
You are asked to enter card details on a site to prove your age or verify your identity before the booking can proceed. No legitimate agency in Athens or anywhere else requires this. The site exists to harvest the card.
Nine signals worth checking
- Payment demanded before anyone has met. The single strongest indicator. Treat it as disqualifying.
- Gift cards, crypto or a money transfer service. Chosen specifically because the money cannot be traced or reversed.
- The same photographs elsewhere. Run a reverse image search. It takes thirty seconds and catches an enormous share of fakes.
- No fixed web presence. A profile that exists only on a classifieds board with a phone number is accountable to nobody.
- Refusal to answer an ordinary question. Ask something specific and non-explicit: which district, what languages, how long the arrangement runs. Evasion is informative.
- Copied text. Paste a distinctive sentence from the profile into a search engine. If it appears on twenty listings with different names, none of them are real.
- Pressure and urgency. Fake operations push hard, because the window before you think it over is their entire business model.
- Impossible availability. A profile permanently online, permanently free, permanently in whichever district you happen to name.
- An address given before anything is agreed. Genuine incall arrangements are confirmed in stages, not broadcast to anyone who messages.
How a real Athens agency behaves instead
An established agency has a fixed website at the same domain over years, a roster that visibly changes, and a coordinator who answers questions in sentences rather than emojis. It confirms the arrangement back to you before anyone travels. Who, when, where. It does not ask for money in advance of a meeting, and it does not need your card details for anything.
It also declines bookings. That sounds counterintuitive, but an agency that says the person you asked about is not available tonight and offers an honest alternative is behaving like a business with a reputation. An operation that says yes to everything, instantly, at any hour, is telling you it has nothing to protect.
If it has already happened
- Stop all contact immediately. Further messages achieve nothing except confirming that your number is live.
- If a card was used, call your bank at once and ask about a chargeback. Bank transfers and crypto are effectively gone; card payments sometimes are not.
- Keep the screenshots. Numbers and account details recur across victims and are useful.
- You can report it to the Greek cybercrime police. Reporting is treated as an ordinary fraud matter. Nobody is interested in why you were contacting the advertiser.
- Do not attempt to confront anyone in person. The money is not worth what that can turn into.
The simplest protection
Book through somewhere that can be found again tomorrow. That is the whole principle. An agency with a permanent address online, a visible history and a name attached to it has an incentive to get your evening right that an anonymous listing simply does not have.
