What oikoi anoxis means, and why the phrase survives
Oikoi anoxis translates literally as houses of tolerance, and it is the old Greek administrative term for licensed premises where adult sex work took place, a term inherited from a nineteenth century European regulatory idea rather than invented in Athens. It survives in searches today mostly out of habit, because the model it describes has very little to do with how adult companionship in Athens is actually arranged in the present decade.

The regulatory background, briefly
Greece has never simply banned adult sex work; it has regulated the premises. The framework requires licensing tied to a specific address, with conditions attached to that address, including distance rules from schools, churches and similar institutions, along with health documentation for the people working there. In a dense nineteenth century street grid like the Athenian centre, the distance rules alone disqualify most of the map.
The practical result is that very few licences exist in the city, while demand did not go anywhere. What followed was predictable: the activity moved to private apartments, to advertising, and eventually to the phone. The word stayed in the language; the institution largely did not.
What the search usually means today
People typing this phrase are rarely looking for a licensing history lesson. In our experience they want one of two things. Either they want a walk-in arrangement with no planning, or they are visitors who assume Athens has a formalised district in the way some northern European cities do, and want to know where it is.
The honest answer to the second is that it does not, not in any officially designated sense. Certain streets in the older commercial quarters around Omonia and Metaxourgeio have carried a reputation for decades, but reputation is not regulation, what operates there is not verified by anybody, and it is not somewhere we would send a guest. The first, the walk-in, exists in the same unverified space and comes with the same problem: you learn what you have walked into only after you are inside.
How a private booking differs
The agency model inverts the premises model in almost every respect, and the differences are practical rather than moral.
- You choose before you travel. Photographs, height, languages and the districts a companion covers are on the profile, checked by us rather than supplied by an advertiser.

South of the centre, from Palaio Faliro through Glyfada to Voula, streets are quiet and parking is simple, but the coastal road and Vouliagmenis Avenue between six and nine in the evening will double any journey estimate you were given. North, in Marousi, Chalandri and Kifisia, distances are longer and taxis get scarce after one in the morning, so settle the return trip early. If your building has a concierge, tell us beforehand so nothing has to be improvised at the entrance.
Discretion and health
