Prostitutes in Athens: the working models behind the word, and how a price is actually formed
The English word prostitutes covers a set of arrangements that have very little in common with each other. Somebody working from a licensed premises in the centre, somebody advertising independently on a classifieds site, somebody represented by an agency, and somebody working on a street are doing four different jobs with different economics, different risks and different prices. Search engines treat them as one category and so does most writing on the subject, which is why almost every generalisation about “what it costs in Athens” is wrong.
This piece separates them. It describes what each model involves, what determines the figure at the end of it, and why the cheapest arrangement is frequently not the cheapest thing that happens to you. We run an agency, so one of the models below is ours and the description of it is not neutral. The rest is simply how the market is structured.
Why the single word is a problem
Terminology in this area is politically loaded in several directions at once, and every available term annoys somebody. The blunt English word is used in law and journalism and rejected by many of the people it describes. “Sex worker” is the term used in policy and public health contexts and is disliked by some for implying an endorsement. Greek has its own set with its own gradations, from the archaic and formal down to the plainly abusive.
The reason this matters practically rather than politically is that the words carry assumptions about the arrangement. Calling everything by one noun implies a single trade with a single price and a single set of conditions. There is no such thing, and the person searching for information gets misled at the first step.
What follows uses “working model” as the unit, because that is the thing that actually varies.
The models, and how they differ
Premises-based
Working from a flat or a licensed establishment that somebody else runs. The person working does not handle advertising, does not screen, and does not choose location or hours to any great degree. The premises takes a share of the money in exchange for supplying the client flow and the space. Prices are set by the house rather than the individual, and the working day is structured around the premises’ opening rather than around the individual’s diary.
Independent
Advertising directly, taking her own calls, screening her own clients, setting her own rates and keeping all of the money. This model gives the most control and carries the most overhead, and the overhead is not obvious to clients: advertising costs on the major listings are substantial and recurring, photography has to be paid for, the phone has to be answered all day, and every enquiry has to be assessed by the same person who then has to travel to the appointment.
Agency-represented
Working with an intermediary that handles the phone, the diary, advertising, photography and travel logistics, and takes a share for doing so. The individual sets her own rate and decides what she does and does not do; the agency decides scheduling and whether a booking is accepted. The trade is control over administration in exchange for not doing administration.
Bar and club-attached
Working in or around a venue where the venue’s revenue comes from drinks and entry rather than from anything arranged privately. Income here is unpredictable and heavily dependent on the room, and any arrangement made is between individuals with no third party involved.
Street
The smallest of the categories in Athens and the one that carries by far the most risk to the person working. It is also, notably, the one that dominates public perception and press coverage while representing a small fraction of the actual trade.
What actually determines a price
Clients tend to assume the figure reflects the person. In practice it reflects a stack of costs and constraints, most of which are invisible from the outside.
The largest single input is time that is not the appointment. An hour booked in Vouliagmeni from a base in the centre is an hour of work and ninety minutes of travel. That two and a half hours has to be paid for by the one hour, which is the entire explanation for why outer-suburb and airport bookings carry a two-hour minimum here and why the effective rate at distance is higher everywhere.
The second is overhead. Advertising on the major Greek listing sites runs to real money every month whether or not the phone rings. Photography that is current rather than three years old is a recurring cost. Accommodation used for appointments in central Athens is priced at central Athens rates.
The third is scarcity of time rather than scarcity of person. Peak evenings, holiday periods and the Mykonos season have more demand than diary, and prices firm up accordingly. August in Athens runs the opposite way as the city empties.
For a fixed reference: our rates begin at around 120 to 150 euro per hour and the applicable figure is published on each individual profile, because the person sets it and it varies. Longer arrangements are quoted as one sum covering the whole booking rather than an hourly rate multiplied out. Dinner, an evening, an overnight. A whole evening is a different kind of commitment, not several hours stacked on top of each other.
Independent or agency: the honest comparison
Both models produce good and bad experiences and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
Booking independently means dealing directly with the person, which some people much prefer, and it removes a layer of intermediation. The cost is that you are relying entirely on one person’s administration. Her phone, her diary, her judgement about how much fits into an evening. If something goes wrong there is nobody else to ring. Verification is also entirely on you, because there is nobody else vouching for who will arrive.
Booking through an agency means the phone is answered by somebody whose job is answering it, the diary has slack in it, the total is confirmed before you commit, and there is an accountable party if the booking fails. The costs are that you are one step removed and that the agency’s scheduling decisions constrain what is available.
The pattern in complaints is instructive. Independent bookings generate more failures of communication and logistics. Unanswered phones. Arrival times that slip by an hour, and the occasional double booking. Agency bookings generate more complaints about the gap between a profile and reality, because the profile is produced by a third party. Knowing which failure you are more willing to tolerate is a reasonable way to choose.
Why the cheapest listing is rarely the cheapest evening
Very low advertised figures in this market almost always resolve into something other than a low price.
Sometimes the figure is an entry price and further sums are requested once you are through the door. Sometimes the duration attached is much shorter than the standard hour. Sometimes the photographs are not of anyone connected to the listing, which becomes apparent only at the door. And sometimes it reflects an arrangement where the person working is keeping very little of the money, which is a reason to walk away regardless of price.
The general principle applies here as elsewhere: a price substantially below the floor of a market is a signal about the arrangement rather than a bargain. In Athens the floor for a properly arranged hour is not much below the range quoted above, and figures well underneath it deserve suspicion rather than enthusiasm.
How people are actually found
Advertising in this trade is concentrated in a small number of Greek listing sites, a handful of agency websites, and the residual forum traffic that still moves people around. There is no equivalent of a mainstream marketplace, because the mainstream platforms exclude the category entirely.
That concentration has a consequence worth understanding: listing sites carry whoever pays, and payment is the only filter. A listing is not a recommendation, a verification or an endorsement, and the site has no view on whether the photographs are current or the number answers.
Anything with an accountable operator behind it is a different proposition from an entry on a board. A phone a person answers. A business that confirms a total in advance, and a name you can raise a problem with afterwards. What the entry claims about itself is beside the point.
What we require, and what we will not do
Stating the standards plainly is more useful than adjectives about quality.
Everyone we work with is an adult, works with us by her own arrangement, sets her own rate, and can decline any booking before or after it is offered, including after arriving, without giving a reason. Boundaries are hers to state and are not open to renegotiation on the night because money has changed hands.
We do not discount somebody’s rate on her behalf. We do not take bookings we cannot fulfil. Athens and Mykonos are the only two places we operate. A request for anywhere else gets declined, and it does not get quietly passed on to somebody we do not know. We do not publish client-supplied photographs and we do not host reviews. Payment is cash at the start of the appointment and the figure agreed on the phone is the one that applies.
The questions that resolve most uncertainty
- What is the total for this exact booking, at this address, including travel, and is that final?
- What is the minimum duration for my area, and what is a realistic arrival time from now?
- When were the photographs taken and is the person’s appearance currently the same?
- Who is taking this booking and what number do I call if something is wrong?
- Is a deposit involved, and if so, what is it for?
Every one of those has a short factual answer. An arrangement that produces evasion on any of them has told you what you needed to know before spending anything.
Common questions
What is the difference between an independent and an agency booking?
An independent handles her own advertising, phone, screening and diary and keeps the whole fee. An agency handles the administration and takes a share, while the individual still sets her rate and decides what she does. The failure modes differ: independents more often have logistical problems, agencies more often have profiles that do not match.
Why do prices vary so much for what looks like the same thing?
Because most of the cost is not the appointment. Travel time, advertising overheads, current photography, central accommodation and demand at peak dates all sit inside the figure. Distance is the largest single factor, which is why outer suburbs and the airport carry a two-hour minimum.
What is a realistic figure in Athens?
Ours start from around 120 to 150 euro per hour, with the exact figure shown on each profile. Dinner, evening and overnight arrangements are priced as a single sum for the whole booking. Payment is cash at the start and the agreed figure does not change.
Should I be suspicious of a very low advertised price?
Yes. It usually means an entry figure that rises later, a much shorter duration than an hour, photographs belonging to nobody involved, or an arrangement where the person working keeps very little. A price well below the market floor is information, not a bargain.
Are listing sites verified in any way?
No. They carry whoever pays for the placement, and payment is the only filter. Nothing on a listing has been checked by anyone, including whether the photographs are current or the number is answered.
Can the person decline once she has arrived?
Yes, at any point and without explanation. That is a condition of how we work rather than a courtesy, and any arrangement where it is not true is one to avoid entirely.
Which term should I use?
In practice most people in the trade prefer the neutral occupational terms to the blunt ones, and the formal Greek words used in newspapers read as journalistic rather than respectful. If in doubt, describe the arrangement rather than labelling the person.
Do you operate outside Athens?
Only on Mykonos, during the season. We do not cover any other Greek city or island and we decline requests rather than referring them onwards.
