Santorini nightlife is smaller than its reputation, and anyone arriving expecting the Mykonos model will be disappointed by about 1am. This island is built around the hours before sunset. What comes after is real but modest, and knowing that in advance saves a wasted evening.
Why the island quietens early
Geography. The caldera villages are residential, built into a cliff face, and sound travelling up bare rock arrives in somebody’s bedroom two terraces higher, so licensing rules and neighbours push against late music from the same direction. The beach resorts are 20 minutes away over a hill. There are almost no taxis. An island where you cannot easily get home at 3am never develops a 3am scene.
Fira, which is where it happens
Erythrou Stavrou, the narrow street behind the caldera edge, holds most of the island’s bars in a couple of hundred metres. It fills around midnight and runs to about 4am in season. Expect a mix of holidaymakers and seasonal staff rather than anything glamorous.
The caldera-edge cocktail bars are a different proposition: expensive, spectacular, and effectively finished by 1am. Two Brothers, a long-standing basement bar in Fira, is the opposite end of the market and has been there for decades.
The beaches
Perissa and Kamari both have beach bars that run late in July and August, and they are where the younger crowd ends up because the accommodation is cheaper and everything is within walking distance. Perissa is the livelier of the two. Neither is trying to be Paradise Beach.
What the island does instead
The evening here has a different shape and it is worth adapting to it rather than fighting it. Sunset from around 8pm, dinner from 9.30pm, a long table, wine from the island, and finishing at midnight. That is the local pattern and it is genuinely good.
Add an open-air cinema. Cinema Kamari has been running films outdoors under trees through the summer for decades, complete with an interval halfway through so that everybody can go and get another drink, and on a warm September night it is quietly one of the best evenings available anywhere on the island. It costs almost nothing.
Practical
- Public buses stop running before the bars close. Plan the way home first.
- Fira to Kamari is 15 minutes by road and impossible on foot.
- ATVs are everywhere and are a bad idea after drinking. The island’s hospital is small and the accident rate is a standing local complaint.
- Most bars close for the winter. From November to March there is very little.
