A group trip to Santorini works well or badly depending almost entirely on transport arithmetic, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. Six people on an island with 30 taxis and single-lane roads need a plan that four people do not.
Villa rather than rooms
For six or more, one property is usually cheaper than the equivalent hotel rooms and solves the coordination problem, since everyone starts the evening in the same place. It also removes the worst friction of a group holiday, which is six people getting ready in six locations and meeting 40 minutes late.
Two cautions. Confirm the stated occupancy is real rather than achieved with sofa beds, and check the step count from the road. On the caldera “sea view” and “180 steps down” are frequently the same sentence.
The transport maths
A group of eight needs either two hire cars or one booked minibus with a driver. There is no third option after 11pm, because the buses have stopped and the taxi fleet is committed.
Book the driver for the whole evening rather than each leg. Paying for waiting time is cheaper than a group of eight stranded on a dark road above Athinios at one in the morning, which is a real thing that happens most weeks in August.
Restaurants
Tables for large groups are the hardest thing to get on the island in July and August, and walking in with eight people at 9.30pm will not work anywhere with a view. Book several days out and confirm on the day.
Consider eating inland. Pyrgos, Megalochori and Exo Gonia have excellent tavernas that can seat a group without a month’s notice, and the food is generally better than the caldera-edge equivalents at half the price.
Days to avoid
- Any day with four or more cruise ships in. Fira is unusable from 10am to 5pm.
- The week around 15 August, when the whole country is moving and the island is at capacity.
- The evening of arrival if the ferry is involved, since the crossing from Piraeus is five to eight hours and the wind cancels sailings.
What works
The best group day on Santorini is a boat. A private catamaran for six to 12 takes the hot part of the day off the island entirely, covers the caldera, the hot springs, Red and White beaches, and finishes at sunset from the water. It solves transport, catering and the sunset crowd in a single booking, and it is the one thing everybody who has done it recommends.
The second best is a wine afternoon with a driver, three wineries maximum.
What is not part of it
This page used to be a bachelor-party pitch that implied company could be arranged on the island. It cannot. This agency works in Athens and Mykonos only, has no presence on Santorini and no partner here, and no request for the island can be accepted. That is a limit rather than an oversight.
