On an island where businesses genuinely do cease trading every autumn, that means the results are full of numbers that stopped working two seasons ago.
You can call four listings for the same island agency and reach four dead numbers. That is not bad luck; it is the structure of how this is advertised.
Treat a high search position as telling you nothing about whether anybody will answer.
The five questions
These take under a minute and filter out almost everything that goes wrong. Any legitimate operation answers all five without hesitating.
- Is this specific companion free on this specific date? A direct yes or no. On this island, in August, a genuine answer is often no.

Photographs, and the island tell
Ask when they were taken and who took them. An agency photographing its own companions answers immediately and specifically.
There is an island-specific version of this worth knowing: photographs obviously taken somewhere that is not Mykonos, on a roster claiming to be island-based. Beach shots are easy to place. If a gallery’s images look like a different country, they probably are.
Reverse image search takes thirty seconds and settles it. Stolen images almost always appear elsewhere under a different name.
Agency, independent or directory
The distinction matters more here than on the mainland.
An agency represents a roster and answers its own phone. When your first choice cannot come — which on this island in August is common — you are offered somebody who genuinely can. There is also somebody to call when a villa turns out to be unfindable at one in the morning, which is a real scenario here rather than a hypothetical.
An independent manages her own bookings. Entirely legitimate, sometimes slightly cheaper, but with no fallback when her phone is not answered — and island signal is patchy in a way city signal is not.

The dates — and on this island, dates matter more than times, because availability is decided days ahead rather than hours.
The area you are staying in. Chora, Ornos, Psarou and Platis Gialos are straightforward; Kalafatis, Elia and the north are further and carry a larger travel supplement.
For a hotel, the name and your room number. For a villa, a dropped map pin rather than an address — villas here are frequently unnumbered and on unnamed tracks, and a pin removes the single most common failure.
Whether you have transport, and whether other people will be in the house.
When to call
Earlier than you think. In peak season two days is realistic and a week is comfortable if a particular companion matters.
Same-day works more often in May, June and September than in July and August. If you already know your dates, call when you book the accommodation rather than when you land — it costs nothing and it is the difference between a choice and whatever is left.
Season by season
May and early June. Good availability, rates closest to Athens levels, roads still moving.
Late June to July. Busy. A day or two ahead.
August. Peak and a different market entirely. Days ahead, and genuine unavailability at weekends.
September. Often the best month — fully open, thinning crowds, transport usable again.
